Walking With God
Scripture Reading — Genesis 5:21-24
Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.
—Genesis 5:24
My wife enjoys walking, and she has walked with many different friends as walking partners. She rises early to meet with them. They walk together and get the bonus of a deepened relationship as they share their hearts by talking.
God is looking for a walking partner too. It appears from Genesis 3:8 that God took walks with Adam and Eve “in the cool of the day.” But then, because of sin, the relationship between God and Adam and Eve was broken.
As we continue in the book of Genesis, something remarkable is revealed as we read, “Enoch walked faithfully with God.” It seems that even after sin came into the world, humans could still walk with God and be healed of the fracture that caused separation. How could that be possible?
Hebrews 11:5 tells us that by faith Enoch “was commended as one who pleased God.” Enoch responded to God’s call, put his trust in him, and earnestly sought him. His faith enabled him to walk with God, and God took Enoch to be with him in heaven.
Communing with God continues to be a reality, and God yearns for us to walk with him. Today we can do that by keeping in step with the Spirit of God (Galatians 5:25), sent to live in our hearts through Jesus.
Father, our walks with you give us insight into how much you value and love us. Drawing close to you and hearing your heart for the growth of your kingdom excites us. In your name we pray. Amen.
