Two Foundations

Matthew 7:24-27

"That house ... did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock." Matthew 7:25

—

At the conclusion of his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus points out that living our life is like building a house. We can build the house of our life in a foolish way or in a wise way. When the storms of life come, the way of foolishness will fall and the way of wisdom will stand.

Many young children learn a song about this story:

The wise man built his house upon the rock;

the wise man built his house upon the rock.

The wise man built his house upon the rock, and the rains came tumbling down.

The rains came down and the floods came up;

the rains came down and the floods came up.

The rains came down and the floods came up, and the house on the rock stood firm.

The foolish man built his house upon the sand;

the foolish man built his house upon the sand.

The foolish man built his house upon the sand, and the rains came tumbling down.

The rains came down and the floods came up;

the rains came down and the floods came up.

The rains came down and the floods came up, and the house on the sand went flat.

I pray that you are building your house on the foundation of Christ, the solid Rock.

Teach me, Father, to build the house of my life on the Lord Jesus Christ. I know that storms will come and that only Jesus can help me stand. I pray in his name. Amen.
