The Mystery of Marriage

Ephesians 5:21-33

“A man will … be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”
Ephesians 5:31 (Genesis 2:24)

—

Throughout the coming months thousands of couples everywhere will pledge themselves in marriage with two simple words: “I do!” In chapels and in churches, on beaches and in backyards, couples will hear the solemn words “I now pronounce you husband and wife.” While some will keep it simple, others will spend many thousands of dollars to celebrate their special day.

Whatever the setting, there is one thing almost every couple has in common: the anticipation of an extremely important event. With few exceptions, there’s excitement in the air before and during every wedding.

Of course! At every wedding celebration two people are being joined in marriage and are about to become one. In Ephesians 5:32 the apostle Paul refers to this as “a profound mystery.” Marriage, explains Paul, has the built-in capacity to reflect something of the relationship between Christ and his church. In our devotions this month we’ll try to learn something of that mystery.

Perhaps you have been married for many years. If you have a good marriage, thank God for making that mystery a part of your life. If you are about to be married, make sure you understand something about the mystery of marriage. And if you are struggling in your marriage, don’t be afraid to admit that. Ask God for guidance to find the help you need.

Ascended Lord, we thank you for the gift and mystery of marriage. Please speak to us during the coming month and help us all to strengthen our relationships. In Christ, Amen.
