Reward for Discipleship

Luke 6:12-19

When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles.
Luke 6:13

—

Jesus chose twelve of his followers to be his apostles. They were to do God’s work to help build his ministry, as well as to care for the sick and the weak. As modern-day disciples of Jesus, we also need to focus on these things in today’s world.

What does it mean to be a disciple of Christ?

Jesus’ disciples are people of faith (John 6:67-69), people who follow Jesus (Mark 1:16-18), who learn from Jesus (Matthew 11:29), and who hold to his teaching (John 8:31). The Lord’s disciples also love God and their neighbors (John 13:34-35), and they bear fruit through Christ and by the power of his Spirit (John 15:5-8; Galatians 5:22-23).

Jesus promises generous rewards for all who live as his disciples. First, they will never have to fear condemnation (Romans 8:1). Second, the Holy Spirit will always help them (Romans 8:27; John 14:18). Third, they receive strength to have victory over hardships and struggles in this world (Romans 8:37). Fourth, they have the gift of eternal life (John 6:47).

In Christ, there is eternal life. All who believe are not condemned. Today, as disciples in Christ through faith, we should live as the disciples did. If we do not, we must really think about whether we are disciples. Have you truly become a disciple of Jesus?

Father God, thank you for letting us become disciples. As disciples, please help us to be fruitful and to always give you the glory. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
