Resurrection Wondering

Luke 24:1-12

Peter...went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
Luke 24:12

—

Something about the women's report struck Peter so deeply that he had to go and see for himself. Sure enough, the tomb where Jesus' body had been laid was empty, except for some used grave clothes!

Picture Peter standing there, wondering. Then he walks away, not sure what to think of all this. How do you think you'd react? Would resurrection be among the possible explanations in your mind?

Of course, it wasn't the first time Peter had wondered about Jesus. The three years Peter had spent with the Lord had been full of wondering. Wondering had virtually become a full-time job as he and the other disciples absorbed with amazement, and sometimes with confusion, all that Jesus had said and done.

If you have ever wondered just a little (hasn't everyone?), then you stand with Peter. You are a Christian wonderer.

It's nice to wonder from this side of Pentecost (see Acts 2). Today our wondering is accompanied by beautiful certainties-certainties given to us by the Holy Spirit as he plants faith within us.

After a while the Spirit came upon Peter so that his wondering would be filled with awe instead of confusion. Peter understood and praised God for the miracle of the resurrection. So let's join him, shall we?

Dear God, we delight in the living hope we have through the resurrection of Jesus. We rejoice in our inheritance that never perishes, spoils, or fades. In Jesus' name, Amen.
