Logos (Word)

John 1:1-5, 14

The Word became flesh …
John 1:14

—

The Word became flesh!

Many of us have heard about God becoming human so often that it doesn’t surprise us anymore. Especially if we learned it as children and we believed it without bothering to doubt, we may not have marveled in a while about how amazing this event really is!

But what if you were hearing John’s report for the very first time in the ancient city of Ephesus? Like many people in ancient Greek culture, you’d be familiar with the concept of Logos (that’s the Greek word behind the English word Word). In that culture Logos referred to the powerful, organizing force behind everything in the universe. It was invisible. It was everywhere. It was eternal.

Now John, whose teachings about Jesus have created a philosophical whiplash in your mind and have generated deep yearnings in your heart, connects Logos to this Jesus, the human being who lived and ministered in Galilee and Judea. The concept of Logos is now filled with new and surprising meaning! Jesus is the Logos who became human, one of us! It’s more stunning than if John has just said a dead person came back to life.

Today you might hear the old story in church. Try to listen as if you’re hearing it for the first time. Bless God with your amazement and joy!

You—becoming one of us? That, O God, is a miracle that’s impossible to understand! Thank you for coming to live among us so that we can live with you. Amen.
