Walking With God

Micah 6:6-8

What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Micah 6:8

—

Yesterday many of us had the privilege of hearing God's Word. What a delicious "meal" God provided for us! Don't forget to thank him for this special gift. Our Scripture for today summarizes the way to live out God's Word in our daily lives with these challenging words: "Act justly ... love mercy and ... walk humbly with your God."

To act justly means that we should strive to provide others in society with equal opportunities and treat them impartially in every area of life. It means not giving preferential treatment to the rich and powerful and not demeaning the weak and helpless.

To love mercy is more than making an outward show of kindness. It means making mercy a part of our lives as we learn to truly imitate God, who is merciful and kind to all his children.

To walk humbly with God is to be in step with God, recognizing that we are totally dependent on him.

To shape such a response to God's Word, we'll need more than good intentions. We'll need to see that God receives our heart-"the wellspring of life" (Proverbs 4:23). A heart in love with God (Matthew 22:37) is fundamental to living a life of justice, mercy, and humility. Thank God, he promises us his love through the Holy Spirit he has given us (Romans 5:5).

Dear Lord, may our love for you increase so that daily we may act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God-and with all our neighbors as well. Amen.
