Orchestrating Love

Romans 8:22-32

In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.

—  Ephesians 1:4-5

The human act of adoption is a beautiful act of love, but it is also a lot of work. Adoption involves forms, home visits, government permission, and a list of expensive fees.

Adopting a child is a complicated and costly process for our Father as well. It takes time, effort, and continuous planning. Our homecoming is the result of orchestrating countless moving parts throughout the course of our lives.

Today’s verses contain strong verbs declaring that God orchestrates all things to accomplish his purposes. Our Father God is the initiator of this relationship. Jesus the Son pays the price for our adoption. And the Spirit acts as our agent, working out the details in our hearts and lives to guarantee our adoption into the family of God.

Orchestrating describes the work of a great conductor who takes countless moving parts and creates one harmonious, beautiful result. In his sovereignty God orchestrates a world in which billions of people are going every which way, and he turns it into the harmony of his own will. God conducts a cosmic orchestra in such a way that the symphony of his love touches the hearts of his children.

Our adoption is sealed when we receive the ultimate expression of the Father’s love in Jesus through his Spirit. What an amazing process!

Thank you, Father, for loving us enough to work out the details of our salvation. May we appreciate your amazing work in our lives each day. Amen!
