Love Always Trusts (1)

1 Cor. 13:7b; 1 John 1:8-2:2

“If we confess our sins, [God] is faithful and just…”

—  1 John 1:9

God’s love moves us to believe everything that is true. For example, love moves us to believe that we are sinners; we say and do things that displease God. If we deny this truth about ourselves, we cannot change for the better, we cannot be forgiven, God’s anger weighs heavily on us, and we are on our way to “the fiery lake of burning sulfur” (Revelation 21:8).

And God’s love moves us to believe this truth about his character: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins…” Think about that! No matter what you have done, if you confess your sin, God will forgive you because of Jesus Christ’s “atoning sacrifice”—his death on the cross to carry away our sins, so that we may be one with God again. Heaven and all of its blessings are open to the forgiven sinner.

Not only will God forgive confessed sins, he will also “purify us from all unrighteousness.” He will gives us his Holy Spirit so that we can put to death what is evil in us and put on Christ-like virtues like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).

God’s love moves us to believe that if we have been forgiven, then, there’s not “anything…in all creation that will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39).

Heavenly Father, pour out your love into my heart so that I may believe everything that is written in your Word. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
