Global Cooling?

Matthew 24:9-14

“This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”
—Matthew 24:14

—

Recently the media have been paying special attention to global warming. But are we missing another important story? I’m talking about a universal cooling in human relations. Could it be that we are on the brink of an ice age when it comes to human connections within our families, communities, and entire nations?

Jesus warned us that in the last days, “because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.” Our personal experiences and news reports often seem to suggest that many hearts are already in the grips of this deadly cold.

What should we do? Jesus’ advice is clear. We have to be strong in our Christian calling, and we have to keep our hearts warm with his love. Regardless of the circumstances, we have to love God above all and love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39).

The prime example of such love is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with the whole world—with people who live near and far away from us. Instead of being critical and negative, we are called to imitate our Savior in his mercy and to present a positive perspective to our communities. God’s Word and godly deeds—those are the things that will keep us all warm and secure until the day of Jesus’ second coming.

Our Father, thank you for keeping our hearts warm with your love. Give us strength to persevere when our faith is tempted. Bless us as we share your Word and mercy with the whole world. Amen.
