Do We Not Know? Have We Not Heard?

Isaiah 40:21-31

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.

—  Isaiah 40:28

People of all ages are fascinated by magicians. A recent winner of the popular America’s Got Talent competition (with a prize of one million American dollars) was a magician. How can magicians pull a live pigeon out of an empty hat? How can they find countless sections of a scarf in an empty pocket?

Of course, we know magicians are illusionists and that no human being can produce something out of nothing. Only God can do that. God created time, and at the beginning of time “God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1) and everything in it. Then “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good” (Genesis 1:31).

Creation brought about major changes: from no time to time, from nothing to everything, from no life to life. If we are amazed by “magic” or illusions, how much more are we amazed by the miracles of creation? And even more by the fact that God created you and me!

No wonder King David exclaimed, as he thought about God’s creation, “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” (Psalm 8:4).

Isaiah asks, “Do you not know? Have you not heard?”

Shall we not also praise and thank God for the wonders of creation?

Creator and loving God, thank you for all the miracles of your creation. Help us to acknowledge our dependence on you as your creatures and to give thanks for all your provisions each day. In Christ’s name, Amen.
