Blessed Assurance

John 10:22-30

“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.”
—John 10:28

—

Several years ago some residents of the Russian city of Ulyanovsk filed an unusual suit against the regional weather center. A local family wanted to be reimbursed for their summer weekend that was ruined because of incorrect weather reporting. They booked their last-minute vacation after hearing a glowing weekend forecast. But instead of enjoying the pleasant outdoors, they spent all three days drenched in cold rain.

It turned out that the weather center indeed did forecast mostly sunny weather. However, it also reserved a ten-percent chance for rain. The judge acquitted the de-fendant.

Have you ever trusted a weather report only to be disap-pointed later on? Most things in our life seem to have a probability clause attached to them.

But when the Bible talks about assurance of our salvation, it’s completely different. There’s nothing said about the “likelihood” of being saved. Instead there’s the ironclad promise of Jesus himself.

The Bible teaches us that, first, Christ gives us salvation. And he personally makes sure that no one can snatch us out of his hand. That’s why those of us who know Jesus as Lord and Savior don’t have to worry about the probability of salvation. Instead we can serve him with joy and thanksgiving.

Do you have that blessed assurance?

Jesus, we praise you for granting us the gift of salvation. Thank you for holding us securely in your hand. Amen.
