Working Together

Scripture Reading — Acts 2:1-4

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
Acts 2:1 —

Healthy relationships are all about people savoring time together. Sometimes it may happen with the need to take care of a family matter. Sometimes it may happen when we’re not quite sure what to do next and find comfort in simply being together. That’s probably what was happening with the apostles when God’s Spirit lit them up and enabled them to do the unexpected.

God’s people are still in for surprises. And surprising results happen when God’s people fellowship by working together, strengthening their common bond and commitment. Strong, upbuilding fellowship develops best when God’s people not only enjoy interacting and being together but also work together. Sweating while building a home with Habitat for Humanity serves both builder and homeowner. Learning a language while serving food to homeless people builds relationships.

It should not take a crisis to pull family members together. It should not be the threat of a common enemy that unites churches. We have the calling of a common cause. We have the mandate, as post-Pentecost people, to speak the language of God’s love to a needy world. The needy are at our doorsteps and across oceans. We’re not huddled in an upper room, leaderless, and wondering what to do. Jesus has commissioned and empowered us. Why are we waiting? Let’s do it—together!

Prayer

Lord of life and love, thank you for the opportunities we have to serve you and others while working together. Empower us to serve people in need for your sake. Amen.
