Time to Feast

Scripture Reading — Mark 2:13-17

Jesus was having dinner at Levi's house.
Mark 2:15

—

It seems as though Jesus enjoyed eating. He was always being invited or inviting himself to a party. In our reading today Jesus has dinner at the home of Levi, a tax collector. Earlier this month we read about Jesus saying to Zacchaeus, another tax collector, "I must stay at your house today" (Luke 19:5). We also know that Jesus' first miracle took place at a wedding feast (John 2:1-11).

Jesus often talked about parties as well. He once told a story about a man who prepared a great banquet and insisted that every seat be filled (Luke 14:16-24). He also told of a father who held a great feast to celebrate that his wayward son had returned home (Luke 15:22-24).

From the very beginning, God intended that we enjoy the food of his good earth. In Genesis 1:29 he said to the first man and woman, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth ... They will be yours for food." Wow! Can you even imagine the great diversity of good that God has given us to celebrate?

Let's rejoice in all the good things God has given us! And while we do so, let's be sure to invite our sisters and brothers throughout the world to share in the Lord's great celebration. After all, as God's Word says to us, "Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!" (Revelation 19:9).

Let the celebration begin!

Prayer

Thank you, Father, for providing for us. Thank you, Jesus, for showing us how to celebrate our Father's good gifts. May our hearts be filled with joy at your goodness. Amen.
