Really?

Scripture Reading — Luke 12:32-40

“Your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.”
Luke 12:32 —

Life is full of worry. A study of daily newspapers across the United States revealed that about 47 percent of front-page articles dealt with some kind of threat. Salmonella poisoning. Peanut butter allergies. Increased risk of eczema for children with pets. Shark attacks at the beach. The risks are enough to make a person want to stay home and never go out.

But listen to the gentle and assuring words of Jesus: “Do not be afraid, little flock.” In a world filled with worries and threats, Jesus has decided to give us something worth pursuing: God’s redeemed kingdom. Jesus will not allow us to huddle afraid in our homes with the doors locked tight. There’s a kingdom that needs the hands, feet, and voices of God’s people engaged in witness, prayer, and labor. The Father is thrilled to give us opportunities to serve the homeless and many others with acts of word and deed.

So we reject living for our possessions but instead use our material blessings to do ministry that clothes the naked, feeds the hungry, and provides shelter for the needy. We stake our lives on a treasure in heaven that will not rust or corrode. We choose to take the risk that God’s kingdom is on the move.

God has chosen to give us the kingdom.

Really? Yes, indeed!

Prayer

Lord, I want to receive your gifts with faith despite my struggles. Help me to put aside worries and fears and to serve you in ministry that helps others in your name. Amen.
