God's Word: A Delight

Scripture Reading — Psalm 119:89-96

If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction.
—Psalm 119:92 —

Did you know that the writer of Psalm 119 says nine times that God’s Word is a “delight”? What does it take for us to find joy in God’s Word?

I want to share with you this testimony from Duane, who has been in prison a long time. Through the experiences of crime, conviction, and incarceration, he opened his heart to God’s good news and placed his trust and his life in Jesus. Now Duane fills his time taking many Bible correspondence courses and memorizing hundreds of verses from God’s Word. He also has opportunities to mentor and tutor younger men and to speak about God’s love for them.

He comments about our text today: “It is true! God has shown me that in his Word I can find delight in my darkest moments. I have seen so many people destroyed while in prison because they don’t have an anchor. My anchor is in Christ, and as a result, I am truly content. In Christ, I find I am more blessed than anyone could ever imagine. I have found that by keeping my eyes on Christ, by finding delight in his Word, I can’t lose. I look around and see one blessing after another. The Creator of the whole universe is &lsquodoing time’ with me! How can that not be a blessing?”

Prayer

Lord, we remember the family of God behind prison bars today. Thank you for setting their hearts free in Christ. Protect and encourage them in often threatening surroundings. Enable them to shine with your light into the lives of people around them. Amen.
