God Offers Light for Darkness

Scripture Reading — Isaiah 9:1-7

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light ... Isaiah 9:2 —

On our first trip to the Philippines, we got around using a locally assembled Jeepney that had its problems. Late one night as we drove home, the headlights went out. Leaning out the side doors, we made it home by the dying beams of a couple of flashlights we had with us. If you've ever stubbed your toe in the dark, you know how much we need light to navigate--not only with our vehicles but even with our hands and feet.

Isaiah tells us, "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light." From the land of Galilee, Jesus came to shine light not into our eyes but into our lives. His light lets us see truth to navigate the path to everlasting life. Jesus reveals "the light of the knowledge of the glory of God" in his amazing love (2 Corinthians 4:6).

Jesus also said that we are "the light of the world" (Matthew 5:14). He fills us with his light, which we can shine out to others. As we come to know Christ better, his light in us shines brighter. Whenever we help someone with their homework, or pick up their toys, or include them in our games and other fun, we shine some of Jesus' light. Wherever we share the good news and love of Jesus, we help bring the light of life into this dark world. If Christ is in us, we can all shine.

Let your light shine today so that others may see the great light of Jesus.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, shine in us. Fill us with the light of your glorious love. Help us to shine your light today, wherever you've placed us. In your name we pray. Amen.
