"Go and make disciples of all nations ... teaching them ..."
Jesus' last command to his followers was that we make disciples. Disciple making is a process in which we develop spiritual friendships and watch what God will do.
Before you can make disciples, you need to be a disciple. Disciples believe that Jesus has full authority in their lives. They believe Jesus is working today in this world through the Holy Spirit. They believe that what Jesus taught is true; he is the Son of God and the Savior of the world. As we read in our passage for today, some of Jesus' disciples still doubted. That didn't disqualify them from being disciples; it just meant they were curious human beings who couldn't figure everything out.
In the original Greek text, the word for "Go" in verse 19 refers to an ongoing journey. Jesus is saying, "Wherever you go, wherever your journey takes you, make disciples ... teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." And by this he means, "Teach others to live the way I have taught you."
The implication for our mission is clear. Making disciples means getting involved with people. Jesus' disciples hung out with Jesus in order to be sent out by him.
Who in your circle of relationships is close enough to see how you live? Who's close enough to see how Jesus has changed your life? What are they seeing?
Jesus, you have called us to be your disciples, taught us how to live, and sent us to make disciples. Help us now to live lives that reflect your grace. In your name, Amen.
