A Hint of Rescue
Scripture Reading — Genesis 3:8-19
"He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." Genesis 3:15
Many people love to hear or watch stories about someone being rescued from danger. We may imagine ourselves in the place of the victim--trapped by a flood or in a burning building. At some point the rescuers show up, and we feel a sense of relief at their words: "Don't worry. We'll get you out of there!"
In our reading today we hear the story of the fall of humanity. And we don't have to imagine; we are already part of this story. Things have fallen apart badly. A crisis has developed. Adam and Eve drove onto a dead-end street and into a huge sinkhole, bringing the curse of sin on themselves and the rest of creation.
But into the midst of the pain, sweat, thorns, and death resulting from the curse, God steps into the picture. Bringing a promise of rescue, God says, in effect, "Don't worry. I'll get you out of there!"
God even hints at how he'll get us out, saying the rescuer will crush the deceiver's head while suffering a blow to his own heel. From our point in history we know that God's own Son, Jesus, took that blow on the cross.
From the very beginning God has been on a mission to rescue his people and creation from the fall into sin--and everyone needs to hear about it. This month let's see where God is at work and where we can join him in the greatest rescue mission the world has ever known.
O God, thank you for not leaving us when we fell into sin. Help us see that you are at work today to save us and all your people. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
